A Hidden Treasure - Sepulveda Wildlife Area (Reserve)

Did you know this place existed? In the city of Lake Balboa (Van Nuys), hidden off the side of the road, on Woodley Ave, is the Wildlife Reserve Area. A very beautiful place to visit during the spring time, when the yellow wild flowers are in full bloom. The entire area bursting with them. Purple lupine getting ready to bloom. Views of the snow capped mountains and city buildings. Teaming with birds, ducks and an occasional crane, A large pond hidden within, containing its own island (duck / bird nesting grounds), with several lookout points and charming bridges.

Last year a large fire ripped through the Sepulveda Basin destroying much of this place. Evidence is apparent in few spaces throughout, blackened trees and soil. However, the place has pretty much experienced a complete recovery. The black actually looks stunning in contrast with the bright yellow flowers.

A whirlwind flock of  Western Meadowlark (yellow bird with brown and grey accents) flew over and around us, and a large white crane graced our path. Other wildlife contained inside are turtles, lizards, frogs, woodpeckers and other species of birds. I encourage you to get lost. There are multiple paths leading around, and through the fields, kinda like a maze.

There is one marked entrance to the Wildlife Reserve, off the beaten trail, past the Japanese Garden and cricket fields, next to the downward ramp / restrooms, marked by large, decorative rocks. Additionally, there are two other entrances, one awesome one off Woodley and Burbank Ave. Parking along the side of the street on Woodley.

If you get the opportunity, visit the Japanese Garden located directly across the way. Adults are $5, kids $3. They do not allow you to eat or picnic inside the garden, but do serve tea and cookies once a month inside their large tea house. It's gorgeous inside. You do not want to miss out on this gem.

Please enjoy the pictures from the Wildlife Area: :

Ocean Trails Reserve - Rancho Palos Verdes (Ocean views galore)

Ocean Trails Reserve - Palos Verdes                 By: Dahlia Acevedo Where has this Ocean trail been all my life?! I viewed several posts about the place, as well as photographs, which did not do this place justice at all! We are talking 360 beautiful views of the golf course (which runs parallel to the trail at first), gorgeous homes in the distance, the mountains, as well as constant ocean views. Let me just take a moment to comment on the color of the ocean (really colors), A deep blue with turquoise pools, crystal clear in spots, exposing the algae below (coastline). There are four paths, two that lead down to the beach area, which is completely covered in small, grayish white rocks. Making it totally unique and picturesque. I've never seen anything like it. I've  posted a picture of the awesome looking zig zag trail leading down to the beach. Once you descend, you will see the bottom half of the cliffs are covered in rolling green, gra...

Outdoor Fun For The Whole Family: Bike Riding and Swan Boat Rentals, Lake Balboa (Encino) and Echo Lake (Los Angeles)

Lake Balboa, encino Echo lake, los angeles Did you know there are plenty of bike paths leading to and from Lake Balboa park? And the best part? You don't need to own a bike to enjoy them. This is my second favorite time of the year, Fall, when the trees are beginning to change color. Brilliant orange, red and yellow colors grace the landscape. The weather is perfect, sunny, with a slight breeze (most of the time). Feel like bike riding now?, Inside the park resides "Wheel Fun Rentals". No reservation is required, and you are free to ride outside of the park. My favorite bike path is the one that takes you around the outside of the park, in a complete circle. It affords you beautiful views of the golf course, hills, mountains, and tree lined streets. (It is not for the faint of heart, just a warning).  The second best bike route takes you around half the inside of the park, affording you views of the lake, shimmering bright blue in the sunlight. It takes you into the more ...

11 Tips For Losing and Maintaining a Healthy Weight.

Before I launch into the meat of the blog post, I'd like to remind you that you are a STRONG and DETERMINED individual, who has DEFINITELY got this! I have so much more to say, but had to stop at tip number 11 and go out for a walk. I hope you enjoy the article!  Don't stock your home full of fattening snacks and deserts, bottled juice, soda, sports drinks, etc. This is a given right? You'd be surprised how difficult it is for most people to actually accomplish this. If you live with a significant other or have children, you ultimately wind up purchasing these items for them, and eventually partake. Even though I have really strong will power, and manage not to eat these items most of the time, I am likely to cave when I am under stress, feel exhausted, have a cold, or it is that time of the month. My mother n' law brings home a ton of sweets every time she goes shopping, and my husband tends to bring home chocolate muffins, coffee cake, or one pound bars of chocolate,...
