Lake Balboa is one of my favorite places on earth. It is always beautiful there, but today was a stunner. The cherry blossom trees have bloomed (for the most part), and are incredibly beautiful. City officials have apparently planted a bunch of new cherry blossom trees along the lake. Thanks to the intense heat we get in the valley it is impossible for anything to survive for too long.
If I were you I would plan to come out and see them as soon as possible. I do not expect them to last more than a week or two. However, the older cherry trees on the outskirts of the park, have completely bloomed. There are plenty of cherry trees around the lake that have bloomed, but are mainly in spots. Some have yet to bloom all the way. As we were leaving the park I felt sad. Some things you feel you could just enjoy forever.
I would have loved to visit the Japanese Gardens as well (located directly across the street on Woodly). I'm sure the Cherry blossom trees that have bloomed inside the park look incredible in that beautiful place. If you haven't been please, please, please GO! I don't know how many people I've told about Balboa Lake and the Japanese Gardens, that live in the San Fernando Valley and have never been, Admission into The Japanese Garden is three dollars a person. The tea house is open on occasion for tea and cookies, and special events are sometimes held there. I love the place so much. I just wish you could picnic there.
I apologize for the unedited photos above. It was so bright outside that it unfortunately washes out some of the color. I normally go through and edit all photos but this time didn't have the patience. Think, even more spectacular in person!
The weather next week is expected to be in the low to mid 70's with rain on Wednesday, so we expect the trees at the lake to be in full bloom by next weekend. Since I like variety, and have seen brilliant, brightly colored pink cherry trees along the orange line bike trail (some other hybrid), next weekend the plan is to ride the bike trail (along Victory Blvd.) from Lake Balboa down to Topanga Canyon Blvd (the end of the trail). I will make sure to add to this post next weekend after the trek, as well as upload pictures.
Update: 4/5/19
Cherry trees are starting to died off, or are red in color. In its place gorgeous purple wisteria trees, draped over canopy benches. They smell heavenly! Dont miss your chance to see the flowering combination.
